I was asked the other day what was the one thing that made the most difference in my painting.
I had to think back about ten years to get the answer.
But I remember when I started painting I was so excited about everything.
I would walk into an Art Store and I was like a kid in a candy store. Ever felt that way?
It seemed like every tube of colour, every brush, and every other gadget in the store was calling my name.
“Take me home!” they all cried out 🙂
And so I did. I bought everything.
Very quickly I found myself with 43 different colours, 31 brushes, knives, palettes, and on and on.
The problem was I had no real clue on how to use most of it to best effect.
And that was before I even started painting!
The painting process itself seemed so complex.
I didn’t really know where to start, what to do next, what came after that.
The actual process of constructing a painting was a mystery.
But that wasn’t even the worst part of it.
Knowing when to STOP fiddling with a painting 🙂
So I would get a half-decent painting and then destroy it by overworking it.
The truth is I was overcomplicating everything!
Sound familiar?
So the one thing I did that helped me improve my painting the most was to SIMPLIFY.
I cut back to just 3 colours – Blue, Red & Yellow (plus White)
I focused on using just a few brushes.
And I studied the painting process until I identified there are just 3 main steps to produce a painting.
When I focused on this simplified approach everything changed for me.
I felt less overwhelmed and confused.
My paintings got a lot better.
I had more confidence in what I was doing and I enjoyed it more.
Then I started teaching this simplified approach, known today as the Moore Method of Painting, and my student’s work improved.
Today at the Learn To Paint Academy many of our students have been with us for three or more years and the improvement in their work is tremendous.
Simplification I found, as have many of my students, to be the one thing that helped me improve the most.
Give it a try. Give the Moore Method of Painting a go for the next three to six months and watch what happens.
Hope this tip helps.
