Overcoming The Frustration Of Learning To Paint

August 9, 2022Are you looking to paint looser?
A few years ago I decided I wanted to paint with more freedom. I believe our approach to painting is a reflection of our personalities.
Highly detailed realism, which I started out trying to learn, was never a good fit for my personality as I am just not a detailed particular type of person.
So I decided to paint in a way that was more natural for me.
As a result, I started painting a lot looser.
And it freed me up to the point painting became a joy.
The video above is an example of my approach now to painting.
I use big brushes, luscious amounts of paint, and bold mark-making.
I definitely don’t try and paint details, and I am no longer concerned about painting in a way where I accurately replicate a photo or subject.
Painting looser has changed the way I feel about painting.
Now I love to paint as much as I can. I love pushing paint around.
Is painting looser right for everyone? Probably not. Some people are suited to highly detailed perfectly rendered realism.
But for a lot of people painting looser can free you from the constraints you may currently feel about your painting.
