Learn To Paint For Beginners? Is it really possible for beginners to learn to paint?
Many believe that learning to paint is reserved only for the gifted, or those with a natural talent for painting. As a result they don't believe its possible for beginners to learn how to paint online or otherwise.
If you are reading this article then its possible you want to know if you can learn to paint as a beginner.
At the Learn To Paint Academy we have been dispelling the myth that you need natural talent to learn how to paint.
In fact we have found over the last seven years of teaching absolute beginners to paint that pretty much anyone with enough desire can learn to paint. We have proven this by sharing the Moore Method of Painting with more than 30,000 students around the world to great effect, and hundreds in one day learn to paint workshops.
So what does it take if you want to learn to paint as a beginner?
In order to learn to paint for beginners you need to do two simple steps and repeat them until you have developed the skills or mastery of painting.
We will cover the two steps in a moment but first it is important that we point out the key element which is desire. You must have a strong desire to learn how to paint in oils or acrylic paints ... or any medium for that matter. Learning to paint is not easy, even though it is more than possible for most beginners to do so. It is not easy and there will be frustrating times ahead as you struggle to produce work that you are happy with.
This is why desire is so important. Many beginners get frustrated in the early days of learning to paint when they don't produce the results they want. In frustration they give up and assume they must not have any natural talent for painting. Which of course is not true.
So a strong desire is what is needed to keep you moving past these early stages of learning to paint.
If you have the desire to be a great painter and a long term view mixed with patience then you have a good starting point.
The two key steps you need to follow are:
1/ Acquire The Knowledge Of Painting
Learning to paint for beginners does require learning the basic knowledge and skills of painting first. This is usually the most challenging part of the process for many beginner artists ... where to get the correct knowledge that you need to get started painting.
You need to learn about the basic tools such as brushes, palettes etc, and about the medium you wish to use. From there you need the knowledge of colour mixing, composition, drawing, aerial perspective, saturation, warm vs cool colours, edges and so on. There is a lot to learn when you are starting out as a beginner.
Most of the early knowledge you acquire will be done through conscious effort. The goal is to master this knowledge to the point that you are not having to consciously think about what you are doing. This takes time, learning of basic skills, and practice. In time you go from become what is known as Unconsciously Competent in these skills.
It is during this learning phase that most of the frustration occurs. Do not give up at this point ... persist and stick with it and I promise it will become easier in time.
Now one of the big hurdles for many beginners is overwhelm. There is so much to learn. So much to take into account. So many elements that go into the creation of a great piece of artwork. Overwhelm is very real and experienced by many beginner artists.
How do you overcome this overwhelm hurdle?
Simplification ... that's the key when you are starting out.
I experienced this overwhelm when I started as a beginner. When I found myself in the art supplies section of the local $2 shop (I went in for a coffee mug), I felt my heart skip a beat with excitement. All those colours, brushes, and canvases. This voice in my head said "BUY EVERYTHING" ... and I did. I came home with 27 different colours and 15 brushes ... and I had no idea on how to use any of it. The result was a big mess. Sound familiar?
The very best thing I ever did was to simply it right down over time.
That's how I came up with the Moore Method of Painting.
Start with just 3 colours, 3 brushes and follow 3 steps.
When I started doing this everything changed for me. When I started teaching this simple method I noticed my students started to get much better results than in the past. And today more than 30,000 students globally have gone through the Moore Method of Painting to acquire the basic skills and knowledge need to really learn to paint for beginners.

2/ Practice, Practice, Practice
The second key then is to practice what you have learnt.
There is no substitute for putting the brush into the paint and then onto the canvas. Experienced artists call this brush mileage.
A famous artist once said in an interview that if you want to become a master artist then do a 1,000 paintings in the next 3 years. That's almost one a day. If you do that, and you do it with the correct basic knowledge, then you can't help but become a great painter.
Then you too will have friends and family comment on how lucky you are to have been born with this natural talent for painting. No doubt you will smile to yourself as you think back on the journey you have gone through to really learn to paint.
As we have found over the last seven years of teaching beginners to learn to paint ... pretty much anyone with a strong desire to become a good painter can do so as long as they acquire the basic skills and knowledge, practice by doing lots of painting, and keep the process simple.
If you do this then you to can learn to paint.
We have designed the Learn To Paint Academy to allow you to acquire the skills and knowledge you need and give you lots of opportunity to practice.
