10 Observations On Learning To Paint From Over A Decade Of Teaching Students
June 1, 2021Preparing your own boards to paint on is super cost effective compared to buying stretched canvases and other painting surfaces.
They are also easier to store. If you have painted on a lot of stretched canvases you will know that storage quickly becomes a problem 🙂
In the video above I show you how I prepare boards for painting on.
Here is an action shot of boards being prepared for an up coming painting trip:

Yes it does take a little time.
But it will save you a lot of money and storage space.
Give it a go. For a few dollars you can wind up with a lot of painting surfaces so lots of painting opportunities.
And to improve your painting focus on mastering the fundamentals of good painting.
Let us know how you go with preparing your own boards.

Great ideas with sealing those MDF boards. I was looking at MDF and putting clear epoxy over the surface of the finished painting. However, I was not getting the glossy finish I get with 300 gsm glossy board. I will try again but first I will seal the board.
Thank you for sharing Cheers.
Thanks for that very interesting video. What a great idea and a money saver to boot.
Thanks for watching Val
Great Videos! Helps a lot.
I was wondering what is your view on using canvas roll on one side of MDF and sealant on the other.
Thanks for watching Amol and glad it helped. Yes I have glued canvas onto boards before and it works great. Just another preparation step but still a good painting surface for sure
I enjoyed learning about preparing boards, but I could not see the name on the small can and I am not sure if I heard it correctly. Is it Gesho, Gesto?
Its called Geso Sandra. Available at most art supplies stores
Hi Rod went well heaps of boards for Challenge thanks
Terrific Stephen … best value for money option
Hi Rod Very helpful thank you…Do you seal the edges of the board or not to worry..Thank you
I don’t but I know one well known Australian artist who uses a bees wax to seal the edges
Can you omit the sealer for the MDF board and just use 2 coats of gesso???
You could but the sealer I find helps
Hi Rod, I finally got MDF boards. I cut them and ready to seal. At my local Home Depot (USA) they recommended interior primer witch is not water based. Is it the right product to use? What primer do you use? Is you sealer water based?
Thank you
This is great thanks for all the good info!!
