Learning From Every Painting

When learning to paint it is a good idea to take progressive steps where each lesson learned builds on previous lessons. This approach to learning to paint in oils or acrylics helps you build a solid understanding of the key principles of painting.
In this live stream video I talk about a new painting course recently filmed ‘Acrylic Painting – An Introduction To Acrylic Painting for Beginners‘. The new course was filmed for Udemy and is now available there.
The new course has three painting projects. Each one builds on the previous one.
The first project is a Values Study … it is painting a basic object like a cube sitting on a table with a strong light source:
Doing small values studies like this in oils or acrylics is a great idea because it not only teaches you about values but it also helps a lot with your skills of drawing with the brush, and your general brush techniques as you learn to paint strong edges.
From this values study we move to the second project which is a simple landscape scene:
In this project we use our knowledge of values and apply it into a landscape scene.
We also learn about the keys to aerial perspective such as colour temperature, values and the saturation of the colour. I cover these ideas in great detail in our Colour Mixing Course.
These keys are applied to this second project in a simple landscape painting.
As you can see the painting has a a great feeling of depth because of the correct use of values, temperature and saturation.
So in the third project we take it one step further.
We paint a cottage in a landscape scene using what we have learnt:
Now this is the key point, and what I cover in the live stream video, the values study of the small block on a table becomes our cottage. All we do is add a roof on it and extend the back a little.
But notice the values structure of the cottage is exactly the same as the cube.
This is one of the best ways to approach any painting … just breaking complex scenes and objects down into simple shapes. Learn to paint the shapes correctly and you take a big step forward to learning to paint in either oils or acrylics.
Also you can clearly see the principles of aerial perspective learnt in project two applied to this third project.
