“Just Have A Go”

It’s become my life motto. Everything I have achieved as an artist and in the building of the Learn To Paint Academy has come about because of a willingness to have a go.

Did I have fears along the way?

Self doubts?

Worried it wouldn’t work out?

Absolutely!

Did I make mistakes?

Get it wrong?

Embarrass myself?

100%

Am I glad I just kept having a go over the last 12 years since I did my first oil painting?

You bet!

Am I the greatest artist living?

Best art teacher in the world?

Perfect in all I do?

100% No and never will be.

Imagine if I didn’t have a go.

Where would I be today?

Living my dream life as an artist?

Probably not! Almost certainly not.

Just have a go.

There is only an upside when you have a go. There is little downside.

Even if you have a go and fail you at least give yourself an opportunity to learn something from the process.

Those who never have a go learn nothing.

You can only truly learn to master a skill like painting when you give it a go. When you try. When you pick up a brush and push paint around.

Whats the worst that can happen when we have a go at painting?

A total failure right!

So what?

Scrape it off and try again.

If your painting attempt is a failure it is not an assessment of your personal worth and value in the world. It’s just friggin paint on a canvas.

Scrape it off, wipe it back, gesso over it or toss it in the bin.

Those who achieve great things in life don’t possess some magic that you don’t have.

They just had the willingness to have a go.

They were prepared to try, fail, learn the lessons, and try again.

As we head to the end of 2022 ask yourself the question … Did you really have a go this year?

If not that’s okay.

But let’s decide that as we head into 2023 that we will make this year the year we just have a go.

Keep doing that consistently throughout 2023 and I promise you that you will make progress on your art journey.

That can only happen though when you have a go. And be consistent.

One thing is certain.
