Is selling art on ebay a good idea?
If you are an artist who has been thinking about trying to sell your art but you are not sure where to start or what to do then eBay may be the ideal place for you.
A lot of artists overlook eBay as a prospective marketplace to sell their artwork. They are missing a big opportunity by doing so. Every day art is being sold on eBay for a whole range of prices.
When I first started out painting I was super keen so I painted a lot. The problem I had was a small studio. Actually it was more like a storage cupboard than a studio. So the paintings started to pile up around me filling the studio.
I had no idea where to go or what to do to start selling some of them. I couldn’t stand the thought of throwing out the better ones. That’s when I read Jack Whites book “Mystery of Making It”
There was some solid advice in that book but the one take away for me was the idea of selling art on eBay using the auction system. Jack reasoned that if you do a painting a day and listed them each day for auction with a low starting price you would start to see good sales within a year.
That was all the encouragement I needed. I started to sell my art on eBay.
And an amazing thing happened … they started to sell.
Before long I was making a good part time income of between $500 – $1,000 a month. Not a fortune but enough to buy better quality art supplies and to invest in DVD’s by well known artists so I could learn and improve my skills. Over a few years I purchased hundreds of DVD’s and watched them endlessly.
Sidenote – Back then around 2011 online courses did not exist like they do now at sites like the Learn To Paint Academy.
As a result of the sales I made on eBay I was virtually being paid to learn how to paint.
Let that sink in for a moment. I was not making a fortune but enough to re-invest into better supplies and equipment and to acquire more skills. It fast tracked my results.
The most important thing to know is that every day art lovers, buyers and collectors go to eBay looking for art to purchase. There is lots of sales of art happening on a daily basis. Its a thriving art marketplace.
Of course it is different to the typical Gallery system where most artists want to sell their work. However most galleries only deal with the top 5% of artists. The rest of us have to look for other markets.
eBay is an ideal place to sell your artwork when you use the right strategy. You have to understand the roll eBay will play in the building of your art business for the long term. I go over this in a lot of depth in our Selling Art Online Coaching Program.
The key thing is that eBay when used correctly helps you get visibility among a group of people who buy art regularly. And being a successful selling artist who earns a part time or full time income from their art requires that you build an audience of buyers who are in interested in your art.
If you are consistent with listing paintings up on eBay, say on a daily basis, then you can build an income stream selling your art on ebay.
You must understand and implement the right strategy though.
Most get this wrong when they start listing their art on eBay.
That’s why I have put together a new course that details the key strategies for selling your art successfully on eBay.
The new course titled “Sell Your Art on eBay”
