Tom Roberts "The Artists Camp"
Tom Roberts' painting "The Artists' Camp" (1886) is a significant work in Australian art history, capturing a scene from the Heidelberg School, Australia's first major art movement. This plein air painting depicts a makeshift campsite in Box Hill, Victoria, where Roberts and fellow artist Frederick McCubbin spent time painting the Australian landscape directly from nature, a practice that was innovative for its time. The work reflects the artists' dedication to portraying the unique qualities of the Australian bush, with its distinct light and atmosphere, and marks a shift towards a more localized, nationalistic expression in Australian art. "The Artists' Camp" is celebrated for its role in fostering the development of Australian impressionism and highlighting the camaraderie and pioneering spirit of these early Australian artists.
Konstantin Gorbatov's "Afternoon Light"
Konstantin Gorbatov's painting "Afternoon Light" is a captivating example of the Russian artist's ability to blend realism with a sense of poetic atmosphere. Painted during the early 20th century, this work showcases Gorbatov's mastery of light and color, with the warm, golden hues of the afternoon sun bathing the landscape in a serene glow. The scene likely depicts a tranquil rural or coastal setting, reflecting Gorbatov's love for capturing the quiet beauty of nature. His use of light in this painting creates a soft, almost dreamlike quality, emphasizing the peacefulness of the moment. "Afternoon Light" is significant as it represents Gorbatov's departure from the more dramatic, darker tones of his earlier works, embracing a more impressionistic approach that would define much of his later career. This painting exemplifies Gorbatov's skill in evoking a specific time of day and mood, contributing to his reputation as a painter of lyrical, evocative landscapes that capture the essence of Russia's natural beauty and the fleeting moments of light.
John Singer Sargent "Venice Street"
John Singer Sargent's painting "Venice Street" (c. 1882) is a masterful depiction of the atmospheric charm of Venice, capturing a narrow, shadowed alleyway that opens up to a sunlit canal. Sargent, renowned for his skill in capturing light and texture, painted this scene during one of his many visits to Venice, a city that deeply inspired him. The painting exemplifies his ability to convey the interplay of light and shadow, with the muted tones of the alley contrasting sharply with the bright reflections on the water. "Venice Street" reflects Sargent's interest in the everyday life and architecture of Venice, focusing on the less glamorous but equally captivating parts of the city. This work is part of a series of Venetian scenes that highlight Sargent's transition from formal portraiture to more impressionistic and evocative landscapes, which were less concerned with precise detail and more with capturing the essence of the moment.
Joaquin Sorolla "Children Swimming At The Beach"
Joaquín Sorolla's painting "Children Swimming at the Beach" (also known as "Niños en la Playa," 1910) is a vibrant and joyful depiction of children playing in the shallow waters of the Mediterranean Sea. This work is part of Sorolla's broader exploration of beach scenes, particularly those from his native Valencia, where the artist was deeply inspired by the sunlight and the movement of water. Painted during a period when Sorolla was at the height of his powers, the piece showcases his extraordinary ability to capture the effects of light and color, with the sun-drenched water and the children's wet skin rendered in a dazzling array of luminous tones. The painting is celebrated for its dynamic composition and the way it conveys the carefree innocence of childhood. "Children Swimming at the Beach" is a testament to Sorolla's mastery of plein air painting and his passion for the seaside life, which became one of the defining subjects of his career.
Edgar Paynes "High Sierra Lake"
Edgar Payne's painting "High Sierra Lake" is a stunning representation of the majestic landscapes of the Sierra Nevada, a region that Payne held in great reverence and often depicted in his work. Painted during the early 20th century, this piece is emblematic of Payne's skill in capturing the grandeur and serenity of the American West. The painting features a tranquil alpine lake set against the backdrop of towering, rugged peaks, with the clear, crisp light of the mountains bathing the scene in a serene glow. Payne, known for his bold use of color and dynamic compositions, expertly conveys the scale and untouched beauty of the wilderness. "High Sierra Lake" reflects Payne's deep connection to nature and his commitment to portraying the sublime qualities of the American landscape, contributing to his reputation as one of the leading figures of the California Impressionist movement. The painting is also significant for its role in popularizing the High Sierra region as a subject for plein air painters, inspiring generations of artists to explore and depict the natural splendor of this area.

Enjoy Success Like Our Students Are Having...
I have really benefited artistically since I have been with the Learn to Paint Academy. Rod not only simplifies the painting process for his students, but also explains the often difficult and abstract concepts behind creating art and appreciating it for its conceptual, historical and cultural semiotic.
-Colin, Australia
My few previous attempts with painting lessons prior to Rod’s Method were devastating failures. I began the Learn to Paint Academy on April 1, 2020, with unexpectedly rapid results.
The 5 Day Painting Challenge beautifully pulled together all that I had been learning and practising via the Academy courses. I never dreamed that I could ever be at this stage of painting! The simplicity of Rod's method makes it so easy to achieve surprisingly good results on the first try! Thanks a million, Rod, for the life changing achievement of the belief that I can do this!!
-Sherlyn, USA
I have painted this painting using the Moore Method of Painting, I have struggled for years trying to get things looking like they should and had trouble with colour mixing, perspective and knowing how to choose a composition.
Then found the Learn To Paint Academy and have not looked back I have improved so much and sold paintings for the first time. Congratulations Rod on a teaching learners how to paint. Great Job!!!.
- Cheryl Howard, Australia
The past few years with you as teacher and the LTPA have been an incredible experience for me. Having done the MCI programme has opened the world of art to me. The continued journey with LTPA has improved my skills immensely.
3 steps, 3 colours, 3 brushes make for a winner in learning to paint. The simplest methodology I have seen online, period.
Thanks for your continued and valued support and training.
Highly appreciated and recommended.
