But only one of them had a profound impact on my approach to painting.

After taking part in a number of Brian's workshops I realised his approach had the biggest impact on my painting than any other artist previously.

Sadly Brian passed away before we could film him.

After Brian passed away I was left with the question of what to do with these last four painting projects we had worked on together.
Should they just be left to history? Or should we make them available to those wanting to also learn from his unique style.
After nine months of thinking it through, and consulting with others who were close friends of Brian's, I decided that it was best to go ahead and make them available to the general public. They are the only teaching projects available showing some of Brian's approach to painting.
I decided to record the projects on behalf of Brian, demonstrating as mush as I could from what I learned from Brian, along with a blend of the Moore Method of Painting which we teach at the Learn To Paint Academy.
So for the first, and most likely only time, we are making these projects available to you so you too can learn from Brian's approach to painting.
About Brian Cook
Brian Cook was born & raised in Yorkshire, UK before moving to Australia.
While in the UK he and a few of his mates would visit the Cathedrals in the area on weekends and draw them.
Once he moved to Australia he was inspired by the natural landscape and the Australian Heidelberg School of Artists like Arthur Streeton, Tom Roberts and others.
A winner of the prestigious Darcy Doyle Art Prize, Brian's work relied heavily on his approach to using the palette knife.
Brian was a popular art teacher regularly giving workshops around south-east Queensland.
He sadly passed away in September 2020.

Learn How To Paint These Four Painting Projects
The four painting projects that I worked on with Brian are below.
As you can see we choose these four projects to cover both landscape and seascape painting. They are a good representation of the style of painting that Brian was known for.
Plus they are easy enough for the absolute beginner to have a go at, and there is enough in them for a more experienced artist to take them and make them their own unique painting.
The first project demonstrates a dramatic headland with some rock shelves and waves splashing against them. The key thing about this painting is the use of the palette knife to paint in the clouds in the sky.
This is a great example of using one dominant shape in a seascape and is a terrific painting to have a go at. No doubt you will be pleased with the end result.
In this second project we have a classic Brian style landscape painting.
He would quite often place a large mass of trees close to the horizon line and then paint farm sheds or farm houses around the base of the trees. The contrast between the shadows in the base of the trees and the roof of the buildings would draw the eye and become a focal point.
We also see in this some of Brian's thought process as he struggles with the overall composition.
Our third painting project is what I would call a classic Cookie seascape.
In the very first workshop I did with Brian we painted a similar scene. He did many variations on a theme using this basic design.
In this painting we see a large dominant headland in the foreground, with distance to another headland further off. This creates terrific aerial perspective and is a study in how to create depth, and atmosphere in your work.
A classic painting project and composition that can easily be adapted into your own work to create unique variations on a theme.
The final painting project is another landscape with a strong dominant mass of foreground trees. The great thing though about this project is that it teaches you how to shape and mold the fall of the land using the direction of your brush or palette knife marks.
This is another great example also on how to create depth between the foreground trees and those off in the distance.
The great thing about these projects as I said earlier is that they can be tackled by both the absolute beginner, and those who are more experienced. As a beginner you will learn the key skills to put these paintings together. For more experienced artists you can treat these projects as launch pads to be able to add your own unique voice to the paintings.
Although these painting projects are demonstrated by myself, I endeavour to share everything I can with you about Brian's approach. I combine this with the simple step by step approach of the Moore Method of Painting.
